Return international flights to Dunedin – MEDIA RELEASE

Sophie Barker calls for the return of international flights to Dunedin

Mayoral candidate Sophie Barker announced today that, if elected as Mayor, she would make it a priority to bring international flights back to Dunedin airport.

“International flights, to Australia and potentially beyond, would be a major boost for our city.”

“These flights make it easier for people to choose Dunedin as a destination, and for local people heading overseas , provide a quicker and more efficient route.”

“Direct international flights are also good news for Otago based producers and manufacturers with markets overseas.”

“As Mayor, I’ll be a fierce and firm advocate for Dunedin. My plan includes high level talks with Air New Zealand, Virgin and other major players; marketing Dunedin as a city; and collaborating with other airports.”

Sophie Barker said, “Direct flights to Australia and other international destinations mean travellers need to take fewer domestic flights and fewer car trips to Christchurch or Queenstown.”

“Inbound Australian tourism in particular has been a major element in Dunedin’s economic landscape, and I want to see that recover and grow”.
