What did I have to say at Opoho last night?

Here’s my speech.

Kia ora. Ko Sophie Barker ahau. I’d be honoured to be your next Mayor.

My goal for Dunedin is to be New Zealand’s most liveable city – a city that works for everyone.

Dunedin needs an approachable values-driven Mayor who builds trust and leads achievement – the sort of person who makes things happen, builds respectful relationships and represents us in an authentic way. Someone our city can be proud of.

Why would I make a great Mayor for you?

I’m practical, analytical, public-spirited, empathetic and hardworking, with real-world professional business successes throughout my career – and a get things done attitude. I’m a polished ambassador for marketing Dunedin.

According to the impartial ODT I’m the number one ranked Councillor. According to Aaron and Lee last night I’m a top choice for Mayor – so If I can get them to agree on that I’m already winning!

I’d bring a new leadership style to Council where people feel safe to convey their thoughts and build respectful consensus. My superpower is that I have decades of coal face experience dealing with challenging customers, so I am well equipped to lead.

We’ve seen some dismal DCC results. Just 25% satisfaction with Mayor and Councillors and a 45% KPI achievement rate. I want a Council you can be proud of.

It’s time to rebuild trust. It’s time to deliver and get the city on track. It’s time for change. Vote #1 Sophieformayor.com

Its Women’s suffrage day today. Time to reflect on what my daughter said to me “If you don’t change it, in 20 years I’ll be changing it”. Only through change in leadership and dynamics can we get old school politics out and a new era in.

The reason I am the best choice for Mayor is that I will make that change. I’m fresh, gifted with common sense and real-world experience with a firm goal to make Dunedin NZ’s most liveable city – a city that works for everyone. Vote #1 Sophie for Mayor
